Press 12 Dec 1933: GIFT PARTIES - In honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Elsie Treneary to Mr Charles Angas, the well-known Canterbury and formerly New Zealand lawn tennis champion, an enjoyable evening party was given by the Misses VERA and DOROTHY GASSON. Miss Treneary was presented with a bouquet and many useful gifts for her future home. Bridge, table tennis tournaments, games, and competitions were enjoyed. The winners of the competitions were Mrs A. Vile, Mrs W. S. Angas, Miss Evelyn le Page, Miss Elsie Treneary, Messrs W. S. Angas. K. Dash, and Charles Angas. Gasson’s team batted first and made 241 (E. Gasson, jun., 110, Stephenson 62, Murray 17, and Riley 16). Bowling for Culverden, A. Rutherford took five for 58. H. Rutherford two for 59, and P. McMillan two for 42. Culverden replied with 169 (S. Herbert 39. H. Rutherford 31, P. McMillan 26, R. E. Hiatt 19. A. Rutherford 13, and L. E. Taylor 11). Bowling for the Christchurch team. AUCKLAND B - Transport having been arranged, an Auckland B representative team will travel to Pukekohe on Saturday to meet the South Auckland representatives. South Auckland will field a strong side, including a number of provincial representatives, at least one All Black, and five of the players who represented the Tank Brigade which was beaten by Wellington last Saturday by one point. SOUTH AUCKLAND TEAM The South Auckland team has been selected as follows: — Fullback: D. Mann (West Coast). Three-quarters: M. Boyce (South Auckland). J. L. Elkis (Canterbury), J. Dunn (South Auckland). Five-eighths: S. Robinson (Otago), A. Manion (Otago). Half-back: C. K. Saxton (New Zealand, captain) [the wellknown All Black]. Front row: T. M. R. Maskew (Marlborough), G. P. Hoare, J. Forrest (Marlborough). Second row: W. G. Gasson, G. L. Bishop (Wellington), O. McLashan, D. Grant (N. Otago). Back row: J. S. Witsey. Reserves —Backs: F. Loughrin (South Auckland) and T. A. Cockroft (Southland). Forward: I. J. Adamson. As will be seen the side is a particularly strong one, both forward and back, and includes some representative players. The inside back combination is said to be right up to provincial standard. Given a dry ball, some sparkling movements are promised. The public should not fail to see this team in action.
