The evening was spent in playing card games and music, and refreshments were also partaken of, after which Mr Aitken (who acted as chairman) spoke on behalf of Mr and Mrs Donald's friends and presented each with a token of esteem. Mr Donald was presented with a neatly made leather bound travelling dressing case, and Mrs Donald with a silver cake basket suitably inscribed. The chairman expressed regret at their departure, and spoke of the good qualities of both Mr and Mrs Donald, who had made many friends during the time they had spent here. Other speakers also made similar remarks and referred to Mr and Mrs Donald as being very obliging neighbours and willing to do anyone a good turn, and all joined in wishing them every success in their new life, after which was sung, "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," and three hearty cheers were given. Mr Donald suitably replied on behalf of Mrs Donald and himself. During the evening several songs were rendered by Mrs Mathewson, Miss Tregonning, and Mr McBride. At about 7.30 pm on the 25th inst., a fire broke out in the sample rooms of Mr C. Donald, of Ranfurly, boarding house keeper and butcher. The sample room was occupied by a traveller showing stock and it is thought that a lamp was left burning in his absence and the fierce wind that was blowing at the time caused the lamp to flare up and ignite some of the material close by. Smoke was noticed by Miss Wilkinson, housemaid, and the alarm given, but the strong wind fanned the flames and soon got a strong hold. From the sample rooms it spread to the butcher shop which was close to the sample room and it was not long before the both places were burnt to the ground. The boarding house was threatened at one stage, but willing workers with buckets of water from the railway tank saved the back part from catching lire. Mr Donald has suffered a big loss, the butcher shop only being built a few months ago. Besides losing the buildings, other stock stored inside was also lost. It is also stated that the traveller (Mr McRobie, of Sargood, Son and Ewen) that occupied the sample room at the time lost a considerable amount of stock. [Mount Ida Chronicle 2 Oct 1925] | ||

IMPROVEMENTS MADE ON GERALDINE COURSE. A number of improvements had been carried out on the course, including the extension to the banks whereby patrons could now view the races in more comfort, said the president (Mr M. A. McLeod) in his report to the annual meeting of the Geraldine Trotting Club. A grass training track had been laid down and was looking particularly well, Mr McLeod said. He would like to see the course proper closed for training when the new training tracks were ready for use. There were other improvements to be made at the course and the course trustees were well aware of this, but they could only go as far as their funds would permit. Mr M. A. McLeod was elected president unopposed, and Mr F. W. Newbegin was elected vice-president, also unopposed. There were eight candidates offering for five seats on the committee and the postal ballot resulted in the. following being elected: D. Sugrue, J. J. Rooney, E. McNab, F. F. Johnston, and C. Donald.
